Podium is software for local businesses: one inbox for texts, calls and web chat, review invites, payments, and an AI Employee, all operated by you and your team. Its pricing is not published; the page says to talk to sales. The alternative for a small business is a system set up and run for you: the inbox, the missed-call text, the review requests, and a named person when it breaks.
Key takeaways
- Podium's own pages describe an AI Employee for local businesses, an AI-powered inbox for chats, texts, calls and social messages, automated review invites, and text-to-pay. It is a real product with a real feature set.
- Podium's pricing page publishes no prices; it says plans are designed to fit your business and to talk to their sales team. We link it rather than guess.
- The comparison that matters is not feature count. It is who operates the inbox, how fast the first reply goes out, whether review requests reach every customer the same way, and who you call when it stops working.
- We run our own software for you: Relay for the inbox, texting, missed-call text and AI front desk; ReputeLift for review requests to Google and Facebook with no gating. We are not a payments product (no card readers, no tap-to-pay) and we do not claim integrations.
What Podium is, in its own words
Everything in this section is from Podium's own pages, as published on 2026-09-20, linked so you can check.
Podium's homepage headline is "The #1 converting AI Employee for local businesses", with the line "Turn more conversations into revenue with a 24/7 AI Employee that manages the full customer journey from first inquiry to booking and beyond." It names Auto Dealerships, Home Services, Aesthetics & Wellness and Retail as the industries it serves. Source: podium.com.
Its inbox page is headed "AI-powered communications in one place." and describes viewing and responding to "chats, texts, calls, and social messages" in "one AI-powered inbox", with "calls, texts, notes and more all in one conversation history", plus an After Hours Responder that lets "AI handle conversations after your team logs off, so you never miss a message". Source: podium.com/inbox.
Its reviews page is headed "Double your reviews on Google with Podium Reviews" and describes an "AI Reputation Specialist" that "intelligently crafts review invites and replies", the ability to "Automate review invites and reminders", textable review invites, Google and Facebook as destinations, and consolidating "all of your review sites" into one inbox. The page contains no statement about filtering or gating reviews, so we make no claim about it either way. Source: podium.com/reviews.
Its payments page is headed "Get paid faster and save time." and describes Text-to-Pay ("attach a secure invoice link in a text message"), in-store and mobile card readers, Tap to Pay on a phone, recurring payments, and Next Day Payouts. Source: podium.com/payments.
Its pricing page says "Plans designed to fit your specific business needs, talk to our sales team for details", and that the AI Employee can be added on to any plan. No dollar amounts, plan names or billing terms are published there as of 2026-09-20, so this post quotes none. Source: podium.com/pricing.
The comparison that matters
A feature grid will not tell you whether a new customer becomes a booked job, because most features have the same names everywhere. Compare these instead, and ask each option to show you rather than describe.
- The inbox, and who watches it. One thread per customer with calls, missed calls, texts, website forms and email on your own number. Then the harder question: who is watching it at 2pm on a Tuesday when you are on a roof? Software gives you the inbox. Someone still has to run it.
- First-reply time, measured. The clock starts when the lead arrives and stops at the first reply that moves the conversation. Ask for the actual number on a live line, not a target. Ours was measured at 2.9 seconds on our own line. See speed to lead.
- Missed-call text back. When a call goes unanswered, one text from your number to the caller while they are still holding the phone. Anonymous or withheld numbers are not texted. See missed call text back.
- Review requests and the gating rule. Is every customer asked, the same way, on time after the job? And is there any step that routes unhappy customers away from Google and happy ones toward it? That second step is review gating. Google's contribution policy lists "Discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews from customers" under rating manipulation that merchants may not do (policy). ReputeLift asks everyone the same way, with no gating and no sentiment filtering. See review automation.
- Booking and follow-up. A lead who does not reply stays in a follow-up cadence until they answer, book or opt out. Reminders go out before the appointment. Ask to see the cadence, not a calendar screenshot.
- Who operates it. The real fork. With software, the operator is you or your staff: templates, timing, number registration, the review sequence, fixing it when a carrier rule changes. With done-for-you, the operator is us.
- Contract terms. Ask what the term is, what cancelling takes, and whether your contacts and conversations export cleanly. Ours is month to month with no long-term contract, and your data is yours.
When Podium fits
We would rather you buy the right thing than buy from us. Podium is a reasonable fit when:
- You want card readers in the same tool. Podium's pages describe text-to-pay, card readers, tap to pay and next-day payouts. We are not a payments product: TradesBackbone invoices can be paid online by card and Relay can take a booking deposit or hold a card on file where that is set up, but there are no card readers or tap-to-pay. If in-person card taking is central, that is a genuine difference in their favour.
- You have front desk or office staff who will live in the inbox. Software works when someone owns it day to day.
- You are a multi-location retail or dealership operation of the kind their homepage names, with the staff to match.
- You want to run it yourself. Some owners prefer to be hands on with their tools. We have no reseller relationship with Podium either way.
When a run-for-you system fits
It fits when the honest answer to "who operates it" is "nobody, and it still needs to work". That describes most owner-run service businesses, where the software subscription becomes one more thing not getting configured.
Martello Systems is a small team, led by Artie, that directs an engineering fleet to build and operate our own stack. We do not configure Podium or anyone else's platform. We set up our own software around how your business already works, we run it, and we answer for the result. You can log in whenever you like, but you never have to.
For a business that came here searching for a Podium alternative, the two pieces that matter most:
- Relay is the inbox: phone, texts and email in one thread per customer on your own number; the 60-second first reply, which is a message you wrote and approved, sent automatically when a lead arrives and switched on by you; missed-call text back; booking and reminders; follow-up sequences; and an AI front desk that answers calls when you cannot. It answers our own line. Facebook and Instagram messages are built and going through Meta's app review. See CRM for service businesses.
- ReputeLift sends review requests on time after the job, to Google and Facebook, every customer asked the same way, with no review gating and no sentiment filtering. It also checks what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity say when someone asks for a business in your category.
Behind them, Mycel holds your business's memory (prices, hours, policies, service area) so nothing answers a customer with a guess. Setup usually takes one to three weeks, highest-payback piece first. Month to month. The price is quoted on the call because it depends on channels, locations and people.
What we do not do
- We are not a payments product. No card readers, no tap-to-pay. TradesBackbone invoices can be paid online by card, and Relay can take a booking deposit or a card on file where that is set up; that is the extent of it. If in-person payments are central, Podium's payments page is the honest place to look.
- We do not claim integrations. We do not "integrate with whatever you use" and do not sync live with Podium or any other platform. We migrate your data from your current system by export.
- We do not gate reviews, and review requests go to Google and Facebook only.
Moving from Podium
- Export your contacts from Podium, with any tags or notes you want to keep.
- Send us the export. We import into Relay, map the fields and de-duplicate.
- Keep your number. Port or forward depends on where it lives today; we confirm on the call.
- Set the messages, not the settings. We ask what should happen when a lead arrives, a call is missed and a job finishes, then build that and switch it on with you.
- Overlap if you like. Keeping the old account for a couple of weeks is fine. We do not maintain an integration or live sync with Podium; the move is by export.
FAQ
How much does Podium cost?
Podium does not publish prices. As of 2026-09-20 its pricing page says "Plans designed to fit your specific business needs, talk to our sales team for details" and that the AI Employee can be added to any plan. Check podium.com/pricing directly. Our own price is quoted on a 15-minute call.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Podium?
We cannot compare prices to a number that is not published, and we do not print ours either, so "cheaper" is a question for the two calls. What we can say is what the money buys: with software you pay for a tool your team operates; with us you pay for the system and the operating, month to month, with no long-term contract.
Does Podium gate reviews?
Podium's reviews page, as published on 2026-09-20, makes no statement about filtering or gating, so we make no claim about it. Our own rule: ReputeLift asks every customer the same way, on time after the job, with no gating and no sentiment filtering.
Can you take payments like Podium does?
Not in the same way. TradesBackbone invoices can be paid online by card, and Relay can take a booking deposit or hold a card on file where that is set up. We do not supply card readers or tap-to-pay. If in-person card taking inside the messaging tool is what you need, that is a real point in Podium's favour and we will say so on the call.
Where to go from here
If the seven comparison points above are what you need decided, these pages explain each piece and how we run it: speed to lead, missed call text back, review automation and CRM for service businesses.
Or book 15 minutes with Artie. Bring the number you answer on and your Google review link. You leave knowing whether self-operated software or a run-for-you system is the right call, and we will tell you which even when the answer is Podium.
